Real Sound Lab has developed a unique technology for automated and detailed equalization of acoustic systems — CONEQ™

This simple, fast and reliable solution offers the opportunity of correction of linear distortions of electro-acoustic transduction devices of all kinds (loudspeakers, microphones) without creating of new defects.


The CONEQ™ technology is applied in two steps:

CONEQ measurement is performed by moving the microphone across the coverage area of the loudspeaker and gathering up to 300 measurement points in less than two minutes. A CONEQ correction filter is produced as the result.

The CONEQ correction filter is applied by a compatible hardware or software tool, compensating for the non-linearities in the Acoustic Power Frequency Response (APFR) of the loudspeaker.

 

Technology background
There are various equalizing techniques for correction of layback of different frequencies through a transduction path of acoustic signal (or simply – acoustic system). Historically this correction is done in a subjectively iterative way and is requiring remarkable experience of the person involved.

For many years there have been repeated attempts to objectify the correction of acoustic systems largely by using of sophisticated math to remove interferences or smoothen the measured curve, but regardless of how successful these attempts were, all of them featured the same shortcoming – the correction itself did create new problems of acoustic transduction, and as a consequence these automated corrections were rarely used by audio professionals in their everyday business.

The detailed equalizing technology CONEQ™ is based on the principle of evaluation of electro-acoustic transducer by its acoustic power frequency response (APFR). There have been historical speculations of advantages of such approach instead of using sound pressure level frequency response in a given point of the room or free acoustic field; however there was no demonstration of these benefits in practice.

How it works
Now, for the first time ever, CONEQ™ clearly demonstrates the advantage of acoustic power frequency response measurement for the correction. The assessment of electro-acoustic transducer is so accurate that it allows direct synthesising of the respective correction filter.

Applications and feedback
The CONEQ™ technology has been tested with various acoustic systems in different environments: starting with simple consumer audio devices and ending with precise and sophisticated monitor systems of recording studios and reinforcement systems of live concerts.

In every case, when actually measured APFR of system was “flattened” by use of CONEQ™, subjectively experts noticed that performance of the system was improved and no artificial effects added. Typical comments were: “sound colouring is removed”, “holes are filled in”, “loudspeakers have disappeared”.

CONEQ WORKSHOP is the complete feature software application. WORKSHOP is available on both WINDOWS and MAC platforms and it is available in LIMITED (one month license), ANNUAL (one year license) and UNLIMITED versions.  CONEQ WORKSHOP is the measurement software tool for any complex system with multiple channels or acoustical challenges, where Acoustic Power Correction alone is not sufficient or where a linear system by definition is not demanded.
CONEQ WORKSHOP provides the user with many detailed parameters for the measurement as well as for the correction curve. And in addition it provides more features, such as composite correction of multiple measurements and a variety of Target Equalizer features. The program allows User defined presets for repeatable measurements under similar test circumstances and it enables the operator to load frequency response compensation files for the Audio Interface as well as the measurement microphone for a maximum linearity of the loudspeaker system.
For documentation and evaluation, CONEQ WORKSHOP offers a large choice of graphs to be exported and reports to be printed. Therefore WORKSHOP can also be used for Quality Control of manufacturing plants or repeated test and documentation of permanently installed sound systems such as Cinema Rooms, Shopping Malls etc.!

CONEQ STARTER is the entry level software solution. CONEQ STARTER is delivered free of charge with any realization tool purchased from Real Sound Lab. The CONEQ STARTER version allows unlimited measurements of the Acoustic Power Frequency Response of any loudspeaker and to save up to ten sets of correction filters.
Additional licences for CONEQ STARTER are available for purchase to those who need more sets and banks of filters.

CONEQ Demo Software is available free of charge to everybody and can be ordered on CD or downloaded from the Real Sound Lab homepage at www.realsoundlab.com. CONEQ DEMO measures the acoustic power of the loudspeaker under test and will generate a filter file and allow the user to see the APFR curve and to listen to any recorded material, which can be played back by the internal player of CONEQ DEMO.
The requirements on the user end are an omni-directional measurement microphone and a good quality audio interface to perform a proper measurement of the loudspeaker.
